Of mice and men

The Independent newspaper usually has decent coverage on the Middle East. Robert Fisk and Patrick Cockburn are always worth reading. However, even this paper seems guilty sometimes of bias and of burying the facts. For example, in today’s edition, there’s an article about that damn mouse, Hamas TV resists calls to pull ‘Mickey Mouse’ show, at the end of which is another item, deemed unworthy apparently of it’s own headline:

Plans have been drawn up to build 20,000 homes for Jews in settlements in Arab East Jerusalem, which the international community sees as a violation international law. The Palestinian chief negotiator Saeb Erekat said the plan “destroys the efforts exerted to revive the peace process. The Israeli government must choose between settlements and peace. They cannot have both.”

The result is that the cause, that the Israelis are undermining the peace process, that the Israelis don’t appear to want a just peace, is obscured by the effect, that the Palestinians are intolerant.
